The Major in Child Development


The Child Development Major is a multidisciplinary program drawing upon the strengths of four colleges and nine disciplines: Child Development, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Sociology, Criminal Justice & Anthropology, Education, Nutritional Sciences, Nursing, Psychology, and Social Work.

Its interdisciplinary focus is designed to give students in the Major comprehensive insight into the issues of child development. The Child Development Program is designed for students who wish to go into jobs or areas of study in child development such and children's mental health, preschools or Head Start. The major will also to work well for students who wish to wish to double major in areas such as psychology, social work, criminal justice, communication sciences, and others. This major will give students who want to work with children in these various disciplines an edge in their chosen field of study.

Students who wish to major in Child Development must have either a minor OR a second major and must apply to the program. Program requirements include a sophomore standing, a minimum 2.5 GPA, a criminal background check, and a completed application. Applications are available online or in the Psychology Department, Winton-Scott Hall 240.
