Perspective-Taking and Motivational Tools
The tools in this section were designed to heighten motivation for treatment by providing unique means of looking at and/ or dealing with an individual’s life issues. They involve using visualization to see problems and potential solutions through the eyes of other individuals (an imagined group of important advisors, a Thought Team) and using symbols and quotes to trigger good feelings or bring into play strategies that work (e.g., prevent relapse, manage anger). A game, the Downward Spiral, provides some fun laced with heavy doses of reality, leading easily and spontaneously to “Why would I want to do that to myself?” responses.
